Aviation crippled in Nigeria as union goes on strike | African News – Nigeria News – African Politics

Business activities at Murtala Mohammed Airport , Lagos was paralysed just as flight operations to various destinations, mostly on domestic routes‚ were disrupted.

The strike saw three government aviation agencies, Nigerian Airspace Management Agencies (NAMA) Federal Airport Authority Of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) locked up while thousands of workers of the establishment remained at home.

Many passengers‚ were stranded, as the union officials would not allow them to board their flights.

At the control tower, only senior staff were on duties to manage the airspace Various representatives of unions , including National Union Of Air Transport and Employee (NUATE]), Air Transport Senior Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), among others were on hand at General Aviation Terminal [GAT] and MM2 to ensure that workers comply with strike. They also forced buses .conveying wokers to both local and international airport to return to their parks yesterday, as members of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) brought activities around the airport to a temporary halt with their protest along the airport road in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warning strike.

The rally‚ which‚ was peaceful‚saw the protesters march through the main road leading to the international wing of the airport beginning from the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) thus bringing vehicular movement to a gridlock.

The union body who were carrying placards bearing various inscription said they are prepare for an indefinite general strike and

mass actions should the government fail to implement the agreed new minimum wage within the three days of the warning strike.

General Secretary of the body, comrade Abiodun Aremu said the action arise since the federal government has on several occasion refuse to see to the plight of the suffering Nigeria masses with the peanut it claims as salary.
Inscriptions on some of the placards read “defeat capitalism before it kills us”, “politicians earns jumbo salaries while workers earn poverty wages”, “struggle for system change ” and “socialism is the answer”

A statement by the striking labour union accused the federal government of being insensitive to the demand of the working population.

According to the statement made available to journalists, the repeated demands by labour, including a two months ultimatum given by labour in July this year, government has unfortunately refuse tom take concrete steps to implement the agreement. The statement therefore said the blame for calling the current industrial action should be put squarely at the door step of government for its anti-people activities.

After the union has left,later afternoon about 1.00pm flight operations being to operate to their various destination.
